At The Hub Events, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. We are proud to support the Power of Women (POW) campaign, an inspiring initiative dedicated to empowering young people in the Tees Valley.

Founded by dedicated business leaders, spearheaded by the late Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, the Power of Women campaign was born from a deep concern for the well-being of young people in the region. Inspired by Plan UK's report identifying Middlesbrough as the 'Worst Place to Grow Up a Girl,' POW aims to:

  • Elevate aspirations: Encourage young people to dream big and pursue their passions, regardless of gender.
  • Ensure equal opportunities: Break down barriers and create a level playing field for all students.
  • Challenge gender stereotypes: Promote inclusivity and challenge harmful gender norms.

The Hub Events Head of Business Development, Caroline Turner explains “At the Hub Events our mission is to help people to learn, inspire and thrive and the Power of Women campaign really struck a chord with us. I’m based in the North East and as a regular attendee at their events and also working as one of the team on their programme for schools, I see the power of their work with young first hand.”

The POW Primary School Ambassador Programme is at the heart of this initiative. This programme engages children aged 9-11, empowering them to become advocates for change within their schools and communities.

The programme includes:

  • Inspiring Encounters: Ambassadors participate in a series of engaging events, meeting successful women from diverse backgrounds across various sectors. These experiences include visits to local businesses, universities, and inspiring workplaces.
  • Developing Essential Skills: The programme develops crucial life skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership through interactive workshops and activities.
  • Building Confidence and Self-Belief: Ambassadors gain valuable experience presenting their ideas, building their confidence, and developing a strong sense of self-worth.

Why is this work so important?
Research consistently shows that gender stereotypes significantly impact children's career aspirations and academic performance. By early adolescence, many girls limit their career choices based on perceived gender roles.

The POW aim to address this by:

  • Breaking down limiting beliefs: Exposing young people to diverse career paths and inspiring them to challenge societal expectations.
  • Building confidence and self-esteem: Empowering them to believe in their abilities and pursue their goals.
  • Creating a supportive community: Connecting young people with inspirational role models and providing a platform for their voices to be heard.

“It is so important to create opportunities and empowerment as early as possible, particularly in young women and I’m passionate about education, the power it has and the opportunities it can open up.
At Hub Events we have a huge variety of professional development and training for all but we have also consciously developed a range of training for women in management and leadership as we understand how important it is to provide women-focussed training.”

At The Hub Events, we were proud to support the Power of Women campaign through our recent event sponsorship and believe in the transformative power of education and mentorship. We believe that by empowering young people today, we are creating a brighter future for all.
